A Calgary woman and big Karen Steck fan, she unleashed her inner Karen and demanded a refund from her unique dining event.

Brita Smith told Global News she was glad she found Karen’s Diner was planning a pop-up visit to the city late last year.

“We were so excited,” she said. “We don’t go out much, so it was like, ‘Let’s get some verbal abuse.'”

Smith purchased two “early bird” tickets for a popular experience. The diner’s meal was described as being served with sarcasm and insults from the staff.

“It was just over $40 for two tickets, which I thought was perfectly reasonable.”

She said the ad said the event would take place in November. However, November came and she still hadn’t heard anything from the organizers.

Smith said that when she was eventually contacted by Karen, she was told it would happen, but no date had been set yet.

“Excuse me. You planned all this. You are selling tickets. No place or date?”

Smith said he finally received another email last weekend with new dates planned for Calgary. Along with the date there was a link to the new price.

“I thought I already got the tickets,” she pointed out.

Smith said what was originally a cheap night turned out to be too expensive.

“All I got was an email saying, ‘Okay, I’ll talk to my manager and get back to you.’ And I haven’t heard anything.

Global News reached out to event organizers.

Event organizers said the pushback was due to “set design”.

“The tickets were two different things.

“This is Karen’s Diner on Tour. This is a pop-up that is coming to Calgary for a very short period of time. It has nothing to do with long-term pop-ups. We have provided the option of moving/crediting for this event taking place sooner if you wish.”

Further explanation follows: “Tickets for the tour had just been released this week, so she should have had her ticket for the long-term diner Early Her Bird, which would have acted as a discount voucher for food at the long-term diner.” .”

Organizers told Global News that the team will contact Smith to clarify what happened and refund her money if she decides to go that route.

However, Smith told us that the only route she wanted to go now was to get her money back.
