Councilman Corner Brook questions the affordability of switching from oil to electric heat, even with rebates offered to low- and middle-income earners.

Charles Pender owns an oil furnace and researched the cost of replacing it with an electric boiler.

The costs associated with replacing the 60-year-old home and the work required exceeded $20,000, which is an up-front cost, he says.

His electric boiler installation cost $10,000, not to mention upgrading the electric service, removing the old oil boiler, and closing the chimney lid. Ultimately, he needed an upfront payment of up to $23,000 before his work began.
