Canadian pop star Kris Wu sentenced to 13 years in jail for rape in China | China

A court in Beijing has convicted Chinese-born Canadian pop star Chris Wu on charges including rape and sentenced him to 13 years in prison. Chinawhere he was born and built a lucrative career.

The Chaoyang district court said an investigation found that Wu, also known as Wu Yifang, raped three women between November and December 2020.

“Wu Yifang took advantage of three drunken women at home,” the court said on its official WeChat account.

A former member of K-pop group Exo, the superstar returned to China in 2014 to pursue a solo career.

At the time, a student told the media that Wu asked her to have sex after he encouraged her to drink alcohol when she was 17.

The court also said it had convicted him in July 2018 of gathering a crowd to engage in a sexual orgy.

The Canadian embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment, but state media said officials were present at the verdict.

Wu was also ordered to pay 600 million yuan (£69 million) for concealing personal income and other tax-related offenses, according to the tax office.

According to authorities, Mr. Wu has avoided 95 million yuan in taxes from 2019 to 2020 by hiding personal income through domestic and foreign affiliates and underpaying 84 million yuan in taxes.

While in custody, Wu acted as an ambassador for 15 brands, including Bvlgari, Lancôme, Louis Vuitton and Porsche, all of which cut ties with Wu immediately.

The court said Mr Wu would be deported, but Chinese lawyers say such deportation usually takes place after the judgment is completed.
