An elderly St. Johns woman is going to be evicted from a city-owned apartment today and her MHA is disappointed with the actions of her landlord, the City of St. Johns.

Shirley Cox, who is 82 and uses a wheelchair, has been deported without justification, supporters say. She received notice of her eviction three months before her, but NDP leader Jim Ding said her notice had no explanation.

A new date of January 31 was chosen, according to the city, determined between Cox and what the city calls “community partners.” The city wasn’t involved in choosing that date and said it wouldn’t evict the women during the winter or until they found housing. However, Ding says he doesn’t want Cox to be kicked out.

He has been working on the case since last fall, but says the city is unreasonable.

He asked if the city would be interested in mediation so they could assist Cox’s appeal and resolve the matter without her being held in a shelter, but it got nowhere.
