Police incident with ‘several crime scenes’ closes Hwy 1 in Coquitlam

Car chases, shootings and Skytrain station closures disrupted traffic and caused fear on the streets of Coquitlam, Surrey and New Westminster on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident is believed to have started at a Surrey car dealership in the middle of the afternoon when the car was stolen.

This led to a police chase, which was captured on video at the intersection of Loheed Highway and Pitt River Road, showing a fast-moving black Mercedes sedan in pursuit.

The vehicle pulled up on Highway 1 in Coquitlam near the IKEA store.

Witness Randy Kang said he left work at the Rawheed Acura at 4pm and saw several police vehicles.

They were later spotted by police officers chasing them. One of them fell to the ground and was surrounded by police, and another was pursued.

Kang heard three gunshots, but the person being chased did not fall to the ground. He wasn’t sure what happened next.

A Coquitlam RCMP statement released to the media said: Our officers are currently investigating and will provide a full update in the near future. “
