Toronto, November 25

The father of 18-year-old Mehakpreet Sethi, who was stabbed to death in a school parking lot in Surrey, told a news channel he regretted moving to Canada with his children.

Sethi died in hospital on Tuesday after being attacked with a knife by a 17-year-old student at Tamanawys Secondary School in the Newton area.

“When I went to the hospital, the doctor said the weapon had pierced him directly through his heart. That’s why he died,” Harshpreet Sethi, Mehakpreet’s father, told Omni Punjabi.

The family moved to Canada from Dubai eight years ago. They are from the Faridkot district of Punjab, the channel reported.

“I came to Canada hoping for a better and safer future for my children. Now I regret why I came to this country with my children,” said Hershpreet.

Holding back tears, Harshpreet told a local TV station that the attackers could have slapped him or hit him in the arms and legs instead of taking his life.

Police said a fight broke out between Sethi and a 17-year-old boy and the teenage boy was stabbed.

The suspect was taken into custody based on eyewitness testimony.

“How did his parents raise him (the suspect)?” Harpreet added, having raised children for 18 years, it’s not easy to lose a child in an incident like this.

Mehakpreet was not a member of the school community, according to a statement released by the acting principal of Tamanawis Secondary School.

He was picking up his younger brother, Bhavpreet, who is in the eighth grade.

Mehakpreet’s sister told Omni Punjabi that Bhavpreet’s birthday was coming up and she was going to buy him new clothes, so she picked him up at lunchtime.

In a statement, Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team asked witnesses to come forward and share their information.
