RIDE stop near Thessalon results in multiple weapons charges

On November 23, a RIDE stop by the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Police Department found a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, a loaded 303 British rifle, and a loaded .22 semi-automatic Savage rifle cut off in a search of a pickup truck. .

Police said in a news release that they were conducting RIDE checks at the intersection of Little Rapids Road and Ansonia Road near Tessaron. According to the release, shortly after 4 p.m. a red pickup his truck approached his RIDE location and suddenly turned around to avoid the checkpoint. Police pulled up a pickup truck near the municipal garage on Little Rapids Road.

According to the release, police found two different plates on the vehicle, which revealed that the driver and passenger were wanted. A subsequent search found a weapon.

Bruce Mines’ driver, Daniel Jones, 32, has been charged with:

  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition contrary to Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code (CC) (3 counts)
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes against section 88 of the CC (3 counts)
  • Carry a concealed weapon, contrary to CC section 90
  • Unlicensed possession of a firearm (3 counts) contrary to CC Section 91(1)
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm contrary to CC section 92(1) (two counts)
  • Possession of prohibited devices or ammunition contrary to section 92(2) of the CC
  • Car occupant knowing there was a firearm, contrary to CC Section 94 (3 counts)
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm contrary to section 95(1) of the CC
  • Driving while stopped (two counts) against Section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Using unauthorized plates on the vehicle, contrary to Section 12(1)(d) of the HTA (2 counts)
  • not waive the motor vehicle license contrary to Section 7(5)(a) of the HTA;
  • Driving a motor vehicle without insurance in violation of section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act
  • Illegally loading a firearm while in transit contrary to section 17(1)(a) of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act (3 counts)

Passenger Cole Barber, 26, from Huron Shores, was charged with:

  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition contrary to Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code (CC) (3 counts)
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes against section 88 of the CC (3 counts)
  • Carry a concealed weapon, contrary to CC section 90
  • Unlicensed possession of a firearm (3 counts) contrary to CC Section 91(1)
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm contrary to CC section 92(1) (two counts)
  • Possession of prohibited devices or ammunition contrary to section 92(2) of the CC
  • Car occupant knowing there was a firearm, contrary to CC Section 94 (3 counts)
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm contrary to section 95(1) of the CC

Both defendants were remanded at the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on November 24 after video appearance.
