The Rideau Canal Skateway will not be open the first weekend of Winterrude, the National Capital Board said.
Mild January temperatures and heavy snow have closed the world’s largest skateway for the winter.
The crew tried to keep the Rideau Canal Skateway open for 53 years and put it back into operation.rd A spokesperson for the NCC told CTV News Ottawa that the canal will not be ready for the first weekend of Winterlude on Friday.
“The expected drop in temperatures this week and weekend is good news for the Rideau Canal Skateway,” the NCC said in a statement.
“While the skateway will not open the first weekend in February, our team is working relentlessly to safely open sections of the skateway, flooding the ice surface each night.”
The Rideau Canal Skateway is a popular tourist activity in Winterlude and Ottawa in the winter.
When the Rideau Canal Skateway opens this winter, it will be the latest opening date in skateway history. The latest opening date is February 2, 2002.
The NCC is urging people to stay off the Rideau Canal Skateway until skating is allowed.
“The ice is still unstable on many sections of the canal, so it’s important to be careful not to take risks,” the NCC said.
The opening date of the Rideau Canal Skateway is delayed year by year.
In the canal’s first 26 seasons, the median opening date was 27 December. In his 26 years from 1995 to his 96 season onwards, the median opening date is his January 10th. 1.
