Exciting news from boring stories.

It’s a real breakthrough.

Elsie (named after A prominent female engineer born in Vancouver) broke through the wall of the future location of the Main Street Station around 8:00 pm on January 23, marking the completion of the first section of the tunnel for the Broadway subway project.

If you’re in a hurry, here’s another video for the timelapse version.

This is the machine’s first tunneling milestone. The Mount Pleasant station site is the first underground section of the new transportation project and features the most tortuous approach. Elsie goes through Broadway City Hall, Oak Vancouver General Hospital, South Granville and ends at Arbutus. All these stations line up along Broadway.

A second tunneling machine named Phyllis (named after a famous female climber and naturalist) is excavating a second tunnel next to Elsie, but not until the first section is completed. takes several months.

Check out this video to see the inside of the tunnel machine.
