A missing worker has died after flooding at a construction site in Mississauga on Friday, Peel police say.

Police were called to the scene at Hurontario Street and Burnhamthorpe Drive and were informed about flooding at about 3:30 p.m.

Several workers were at the scene when the pipe burst and the room filled with water, police said.

All but one worker managed to escape. Firefighters pumped water to enable a search, but police said the man died shortly after being found after midnight.

Roads in the immediate vicinity, where the Peel region said water mains and sanitary sewer improvements were underway, have since reopened.

Peel Police say the Department of Labor has now taken over the investigation and is investigating the circumstances that led to the man’s death.
