Health unit reports 117th local COVID death

The Blount County Health Department on Tuesday reported one COVID-19 death last week, bringing the local death toll from the virus to 117 since the pandemic began.

The latest victim, a woman in her 90s, was part of an ongoing outbreak at St Joseph’s Lifecare Center in Brantford. She was not considered hospitalized at the time of her death.

Health departments on Tuesday also reported 48 new COVID cases from last week, unchanged from the previous week.

There are now 44 active COVID cases, down from 60 last week.

The Brant Community Health Care System has reported eight COVID-19 cases at Brantford General Hospital or Willett in Paris, while seven are hospitalized with the virus, according to the health department. COVID patients are not in intensive care.

There are currently three regional COVID outbreaks, including one affecting 20 residents and three staff members at Rosewood House. Other infections include St Joseph’s Cathedral, where seven residents have been affected, and Telfer Place in Paris, where two residents and one staff member have contracted the virus.

According to the Department of Health, 85% of local residents received the first dose, 82% received the second dose, 49% received the third dose, and 22% received the fourth dose.

The vaccination clinic will be held on Wednesday from 10:15 am to 2:45 pm at the Paris fairgrounds and on Friday from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm at the Civic Center auditorium in Brantford.

An update from Six Nations in Grand River, updated Jan. 25, shows five active COVID cases. No one from the Six Nations is currently hospitalized.

Since the pandemic began, Six Nations has recorded 1,706 COVID cases and 24 deaths.

A vaccine clinic will be held Thursday from 9am to 4pm at Ohsweken Public Health at 1769 Chiefswood Rd.
