A shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Va., on Tuesday night left several people dead or injured, although the exact number was not immediately known.

Chesapeake Police spokesman Leo Kosinski said in a briefing that officers responded to reports of shootings at the store around 10:15 p.m. ET and found evidence of the shootings upon arrival.

Officers spent 35 to 40 minutes finding multiple dead and wounded people inside the store, he said, and gathered a rescue team and a tactics team to enter the store and tend to the victims.

Police believe one shooter has died. Kosinski said they believed the shooting stopped when police arrived. He did not give a death toll, but said “less than 10 at the moment.”

Kosinski said he didn’t believe police opened fire, but said he didn’t know if the shooter died from self-inflicted injuries.

Chesapeake is located about 11 kilometers south of Norfolk.

“We are shocked by this tragic event at our Chesapeake, Virginia store,” Walmart tweeted early Wednesday. We are working closely with law enforcement and our focus is on helping our allies,” the tweet said.

Days after Colorado nightclub shooting

Sentara Healthcare spokesman Mike Kafka said in a text message that five Walmart patients are being treated at Norfolk General Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately clear.

The Virginia shooting comes three days after a man opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five and injuring 17. The shooting occurred in a year when the country was rocked by the death of 21 people in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Senator Mark Warner tweeted, “I’m sick of reports of a shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake this time.”

Tuesday’s shooting also brought back memories of another Walmart shooting in 2019. Police say the shooter was targeting a Mexican, but opened fire on a store in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 people.
