Newfoundland and Labrador Sees Highest Percentage Increase in Rate of Homicide in Canada

Newfoundland and Labrador had the highest year-over-year increases in homicide rates in the country in 2021.

There were 788 homicides in Canada that year, 29 more than the previous year and the third straight year of increase. Statistics Canada figures.

Newfoundland and Labrador will record eight murders in 2021, double the number in 2020. British Columbia increased by 24% and Ontario by 15%, the second and he third-highest percentage increase. The Census metropolitan areas with the largest year-over-year increases were Windsor at 101%, St. John’s at 100% and London at 98%.

Newfoundland and Labrador have recorded no gang-related homicides, down from 1 in 2020. At the national level, the rate of gang-related homicides recorded in Canada was the highest since comparable data were first collected in he 2005.
