A joint European Union-Ukraine summit in Kyiv on Friday was a “very strong signal” of support, EU officials said at a pre-meeting briefing.

Speaking to journalists in Brussels this week, a senior EU official said holding a meeting in Kyiv during the Russian invasion was “first and foremost a signal in favor of the Ukrainians being there in person.” .

“It is, of course, a signal for Russia,” the official added.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in the Ukrainian capital with her commissioners on Thursday ahead of the summit.

This will be the 24th summit between the European Union and Ukraine, but the first since the start of the Russian aggression and the European Council’s recognition of Ukraine as a candidate state.

Leaders are expected to discuss Ukraine’s progress towards full EU membership, response to Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine, further assistance to Ukraine and global food security. .

“The question about whether Ukraine will join the European family has been answered definitively yes. It’s not a question of whether or not,” the official said.

However, they didn’t want to speculate when this process would be completed, as historically it takes many years to become a full member of the EU.

A second senior EU official welcomed Ukraine’s recent anti-corruption efforts, including recent government reforms amid a growing corruption scandal.

“Of course, there is still a lot of work left to do on this, which we are working with Ukraine on,” the official added.

On 24 January, a European Commission spokesperson said: “Anti-corruption is, of course, an important aspect of the EU accession process.”
