Trudeau expected to appoint O’Regan’s replacement as labour minister

Government House leader Steven MacKinnon has arrived at Rideau Hall, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to swear in a new labour minister this morning.

Trudeau is appointing a replacement for Seamus O’Regan, whose resignation is effective today after he announced Thursday he was leaving cabinet for family reasons.

MacKinnon joined cabinet as the House leader in January to replace Karina Gould while she is on maternity leave.

He previously served as the Liberals’ chief whip in the House of Commons.

O’Regan is expected to continue sitting as a Newfoundland MP until the next federal election.

The full cabinet is expected to meet virtually today for the first time since the Liberals’ surprising loss in a Toronto byelection last month.
